The heptahydrate form consists of crimson monoclinic prismatic crystals, with a density of 2.03 g/cm³; it dehydrates to the hexahydrate at 41°C, and further converts to the monohydrate at 74°C. Both the anhydrous and heptahydrate forms are readily soluble in water.
